Julius and Melissa have helped create the first Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) summer course on synthetic biology. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory has hosted summer courses and conferences on important topics of biology for over 65 years. Notable past courses include Max Delbruck’s original phage course, which helped crystallize the field of molecular biology, and led to several Nobel Prizes for key discoveries in that area. The laboratory is also known for hosting the work of notable biologists including Cornell’s own Barbara McClintock.
Julius joined Professors Jeff Tabor (Rice), David Savage (UC Berkeley), and Karmella Haynes (Arizona State) to create the course for the first time. Melissa joined Even Olson, Dana Nadler and Rene Davis as the first teaching assistants for the course. The course, for sixteen select students from around the world, lasted for two weeks and consisted of intensive laboratory experiments consisting of real research projects from each of the labs, and talks from world class synthetic biology researchers including Richard Murray, Eric Klavens, Pam Silver, Adam Arkin, Andy Ellington, Justin Gallivan, Michelle Chang, Dan Gibson, Mike Jewett and Ron Weiss. Additional time spent by the speakers in the laboratory offered an informal and intellectually engaging experience for the students and speakers.
